Lake Bled in Slovenia

Lake Bled is a glacial lake in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, where it adjoins the town of Bled. The area is a popular tourist destination. The lake is 2,120 m long and 1,380 m wide with a maximum depth of 30.6 m. The lake is located in a picturesque setting surrounded by mountains and forests.

The medieval-era Lake Bled Castle is above the lake on the north coast. The lake surrounds Bled Island the only natural island in Slovenia. The island has several buildings, the main one being the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption, built in the 15th century, where weddings are held regularly. The church has a tower 52 meters and there is a staircase with 99 steps leading to the building. Traditionally it is considered good luck for the groom to take his bride to the 99 steps on the day before her wedding ring the bell and make a wish within the church.
